Speedlight Not Firing on Camera: What This Usually Means

If your speedlight is not firing on camera, the problem is usually one of four things: power, contact, compatibility, or camera settings.

The good news is that most failures can be isolated quickly without special tools.

In DSLR and mirrorless setups, a flash that works off-camera may still fail on-camera because the hot shoe connection is not being made correctly, the camera is blocking flash, or the flash is waiting for a signal the camera is not sending.

Understanding the signal path is the fastest way to find the fault.

Start With the Basics: Power, Seating, and Mode

Before changing settings, confirm that both the camera and flash are ready to communicate.

A speedlight can look active but still be unable to fire if one of the simplest conditions is missing.

  • Check flash power: Replace or recharge batteries and confirm the flash is fully powered on.
  • Seat the flash firmly: Slide it fully into the hot shoe until it stops, then tighten the locking wheel or lever.
  • Use a compatible flash mode: Make sure the speedlight is in on-camera mode, not optical slave, radio slave, or a disabled custom mode.

  • Look for an in-camera flash setting, flash control menu, or external flash control page.

Inspect exposure and sync-related settings

Shutter speed is another common reason a speedlight appears not to fire correctly.

If the shutter speed exceeds the camera’s flash sync speed, you may get a partial frame or no visible flash effect, especially with non-HSS flashes.

  • Use a shutter speed at or below the camera’s sync speed, often 1/200s or 1/250s.
  • Turn off high-speed sync unless your flash and camera both support it.
  • Reset any custom flash exposure compensation that may be suppressing output.

Hot Shoe Contact Problems Are Very Common

The hot shoe is the most common failure point when a speedlight not firing on camera issue appears suddenly.

A small gap, dirty contact, or incompatible pin layout can prevent communication even when the flash seems properly mounted.

Clean the contacts

Use a clean microfiber cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol to clean the camera shoe and flash foot contacts.

Let everything dry fully before testing again.

Do not use abrasive materials that can scratch the contacts.

Physical damage to the center pin or side rails can create intermittent firing problems that come and go as the flash shifts.

Check for mounting interference

Some accessories can block the flash foot from seating all the way down:

  • Aftermarket hot shoe protectors
  • Wireless receivers
  • Bracket plates or cage mounts
  • Loose locking mechanisms

Try mounting the speedlight directly on the camera with no accessories attached.

If it fires then, the issue is mechanical rather than electrical.

Confirm Compatibility Between Camera and Speedlight

Not every flash communicates perfectly with every camera system.

Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, and Olympus/OM System all use their own hot shoe conventions and communication protocols, and some third-party flashes behave differently across brands or firmware versions.

If you are using a third-party unit, confirm that it is designed for your exact mount and generation of camera body.

A flash may physically fit yet still not support all TTL, HSS, wake, or menu functions.

  • Verify brand-specific compatibility, especially for Sony multi-interface shoes and newer mirrorless bodies.
  • Check whether the flash needs a firmware update.
  • Test the flash on another compatible camera body if available.

If the flash fires on one body but not another, the issue is likely a camera-side setting, not a broken unit.

Test Manual Flash Firing and TTL Separately

When troubleshooting, separate the flash’s basic firing function from advanced exposure automation.

TTL adds communication complexity, so a flash that fails in TTL may still work perfectly in manual mode.

Switch the speedlight to manual power, set a low output such as 1/32, and take a simple test shot.

If it fires manually but not in TTL, the camera and flash are communicating only partially.

That points to a protocol mismatch, TTL setting, or custom function issue.

If the flash has a test button and fires there but not on camera, the internal tube and power system are probably fine.

The remaining problem is between the camera and flash interface.

Look at Wireless, Slave, and Off-Camera Features

Many photographers use the same flash both on-camera and off-camera, but the flash may retain a wireless receiver mode that blocks hot shoe firing.

That is especially common after using optical slaves, built-in radio receivers, or master/slave group settings.

Reset the flash to its default on-camera operating mode.

If your unit supports a menu system, look for:

  • Wireless off
  • Receiver disabled
  • Optical slave off
  • Radio control off
  • Master flash disabled

Also check whether the camera body itself is trying to command the flash wirelessly when you expect direct shoe firing.

Mixed wireless and direct setups can create confusing behavior.

Check for Firmware, Reset, and Custom Function Issues

Firmware bugs and custom functions can produce symptoms that look like hardware failure.

Some flashes remember a previous configuration that prevents normal operation until it is cleared.

Use these recovery steps:

  • Restore the flash to factory defaults.
  • Reset the camera’s custom flash menu settings.
  • Update flash firmware if the manufacturer provides an updater.
  • Power-cycle both camera and flash after changing settings.

A factory reset is especially useful after experimenting with high-speed sync, group control, or brand-specific wireless options.

It removes hidden state that can keep the flash from firing on camera.

How to Isolate Whether the Problem Is the Camera or the Flash?

The fastest diagnostic method is a simple swap test.

If you have another compatible flash, mount it on the same camera.

If that flash fires, the original speedlight is the likely problem.

If neither fires, the camera setting or hot shoe is the more likely cause.

You can also test the suspect flash on another compatible body.

This helps confirm whether the issue is tied to the flash foot, the protocol, or the camera’s shoe contacts.

For studio work, a sync cord or wireless trigger can provide an alternate path and help rule out the hot shoe entirely.

When the Flash Fires Intermittently

Intermittent firing usually points to a physical contact issue, a worn hot shoe, or a locking problem.

A flash that works only when pressed down may have a poor connection at the center pin or side contacts.

  • Retighten the locking wheel or lever.
  • Inspect the foot for cracks, wear, or bent contacts.
  • Try a different hot shoe mount or adapter.
  • Check for movement caused by a heavy flash head or bracket.

Intermittent behavior can also come from overheating protection.

If the flash has been fired repeatedly at high power, let it cool and test again.

Practical Checklist for a Speedlight Not Firing on Camera

Run through this sequence when the flash will not fire:

  1. Replace or recharge batteries.
  2. Mount the flash directly and firmly on the hot shoe.
  3. Confirm the flash is in the correct on-camera mode.
