Understand the Main Parts of a Film Camera

Before shooting, it helps to know the controls you will actually use.

Different cameras vary, but most 35mm and medium format film cameras share the same basic functions.

  • Lens: Determines focal length and aperture.
  • Shutter button: Triggers the exposure.
  • Film advance lever or knob: Moves the film to the next frame.
  • Film rewind crank or lever: Returns exposed film to the cassette.

Focus Without Guessing

Take the Shot and Advance the Film

After focusing and metering, press the shutter smoothly.

On mechanical cameras, avoid jabbing the button, which can introduce shake at slower speeds.

Once the exposure is made, advance the film to the next frame.

This prepares the camera for the next shot and keeps the frame count accurate.

Do not force the advance lever; if it resists, check whether the shutter has fully fired or whether the film has reached the end.

Rewind and Remove the Roll

When the roll is finished, most cameras will stop advancing.

Use the rewind crank or lever to return the film to the cassette before opening the back.

  1. Press the rewind release button if your camera has one.
  2. Turn the rewind crank or knob in the direction marked on the camera.
  3. Continue until resistance drops and the film is fully rewound.
  4. Open the back and remove the cassette.

Keep the exposed roll out of direct sunlight and store it in a cool, dry place until development.

Develop, Scan, or Print the Film

After shooting, the film must be developed before you can view the images.

Many labs offer development for C-41 color negative film, black-and-white film, and scanning services.
